LG claims that the 2019 Samsung QLED TVs do not offer real 8K resolution

8 Septiembre 2019, 07:05:01

LG claims that the 2019 Samsung QLED TVs do not offer real 8K resolutionAt the IFA 2019 in Berlin, LG has been quite outright claiming that Samsung's 2019 QLED TVs do not offer real 8K resolution. LG has made such claims before but this is the first time it has named Samsung. "We believe Samsung's 8K TV is not really 8K," said Park Hyoung-sei, executive vice president at LG Electronics TV Business Operation Center. "Consumers need to know the truth and know what value they are getting for the price they pay."

LG said at a press briefing yesterday that Intertek and VDE tests showed that Samsung's QLED 8K TV has a contrast modulation (CM) level of 12%, far below the 50% threshold to qualify as 8K resolution. For comparison, LG's 8K OLED TVs have a CM level of 90%. CM is the difference in black and white luminance on a display. The higher it is, the sharper the image is.

According to the ICDM, which sets the industry's standards, the threshold for contrast modulation (CM) levels for text-displaying screens is 50% and the one for image-displaying screens is 25%. In 2012, the ICDM said that contrast modulation is "the best way to describe display resolution" and made it mandatory for companies to report it. Global tech companies, such as Dolby, Apple, Microsoft, Panasonic, Samsung and LG, had agreed on the guidelines as members of the ICDM. So, in order to meet the international standard for 8K resolution, such a TV must not only have a 7680 by 4320 pixels (33 mln) but also have a contrast modulation that exceeds 50%.

LG has added that older Samsung 8K OLED models have abided by the CM threshold but the ones from MY2019 do not. LG representatives said: "The fall in Samsung QLED 8K TVs' CM happened so abruptly and drastically, we only suspect something Samsung did to improve other features, such as improving the viewing angle, to have resulted in negatively affecting the CM rate."

A Samsung representative declined to comment and there are no plans to host a press conference in reply to LG's claims. Recently, LG has been quite active in its pressroom online educating the audience about the true 8K quality and we now understand why.Origen
