LG Display's 4th-Generation OLED is the first to feature three primary colors of light independently

LG Display has provided some more details about its 4th Gen OLED display panel focusing on the fact that it is the first to feature three primary colors of light independently. Display panels are composed of red, green, and blue pixels (RGB) as primary colors of light because the cells in human eyes responsible for color perception respond to these three. The way these elements are implemented determines the performance of the display panel. LG's 4th Gen OLED panel is the first in the industry to feature all three primary colors of light independently.
The core innovation of fourth-generation OLED is Primary RGB Tandem technology. In LG Display's 3rd-generation OLED panels, the light sources for colors were structured in three layers: two blue and one yellow-green. The yellow-green layer was used to express both red and green, but this approach limited light intensity.
Fourth-generation OLED has replaced that yellow-green layer with independent red and green layers, making up a total of four layers when added to the two blue ones and allowing for more vivid and pure color expression. The key innovation of the fourth-generation OLED panel lies in independent light sources for each color, with their own wavelength and thickness. Stacking them in this manner is exceptionally challenging, which is why no other company had achieved it until now.
While LG Display's third-generation OLED only required matching the wavelengths of yellow-green and blue, fourth-generation OLED must align the wavelengths of red, green, and blue. It makes the technology more complex but enables a 40% improvement in color brightness and a 33% increase in peak brightness reaching 4000 nits compared to the 3000 nits in the 3rd generation.
The 4th Gen OLED display panels by LG Display will power the LG OLED evo M5 and LG OLED evo G5 series for 2025.
