Canon wants to enter the OLED marketJapan-based Canon wants to enter the OLED market by producing organic light-emitting diode (OLED) materials for next-generation, flexible light displays. The information has been shared by Canon's Chairman and CEO Fujio Mitarai in an interview with Asia Nikkei

Amid sharp declines in net profit from cameras and other flagship products as a backdrop, Canon sees in this market potential for future growth. Last year, Canon's net income was $ 1.96 billion, down more than 51% over the year. Entering the OLED market will be done in cooperation with its subsidiary Fukui Canon Material, the company develops organic materials. Fukui Canon Materials is a manufacturer of organic photoconductor (OPC) raw materials and optical materials, which are key components of laser printers and copiers. It is expected to play a leading role in the mass production of OLED materials as it possesses the technology to do so.

Canon is keen to promote new businesses to defend its earnings. The company diversified its business portfolio by launching medical equipment and closed-circuit television (CCTV) image analysis solutions. The OLED materials business is a good choice to further diversify Canon's business portfolio. The company is already involved in the OLED supply chain through its subsidiaries. Equipment maker Canon Docky is leading the 6th generation OLED deposition market. It is supplying equipment to Samsung Display and LG Display. If organic material production becomes a reality, it will be equipped with solid technical skills in OLED field from materials to equipment.

The growth potential of the OLED market is high. OLEDs are widely used in smartphones and TVs. According to market research firm IHS Markit, OLED TV sales are expected to increase from 5.5 million units in 2020 to 7.1 million units in 2021 and 10 million units in 2022.Source
