LG Display has taken a decisive step toward reshaping OLED manufacturing, announcing the successful development of a long‑anticipated "dream technology" that eliminates the need for the conventional fine metal mask (FMM) process. The breakthrough method, branded FLiPP (FMM‑Less innovative Pixel Patterning), will be unveiled publicly for the first time at IMID 2026 in Busan, where the company will host a dedicated exhibition hall from August 19.
A Fundamental Shift in OLED Manufacturing
LG Display's new patterning approach replaces the decades‑old FMM technique with a proprietary process that coats RGB pixels sequentially, secures them in precise positions, and uses photolithography to remove unwanted material. By removing the metal mask entirely, FLiPP avoids the sagging, misalignment, and color‑mixing defects that have long plagued large‑area OLED production. The performance gains are substantial. Under identical conditions, FLiPP‑produced panels achieve 1.6x higher brightness, 2.4x longer lifespan, and 13% lower power consumption. These improvements stem from a roughly 55% increase in aperture ratio, allowing more of the display's surface to be occupied by active RGB pixels.
Efficiency and Cost Advantages
The traditional FMM process forces manufacturers to divide large mother glass substrates - such as 8th Gen or 8.6th Gen sheets - into half‑cut pieces due to mask size limitations. FLiPP removes this constraint entirely. Leveraging its Tandem WOLED infrastructure, LG Display has become the first company to manufacture full‑size 8.5th Gen OLED panels without FMMs, boosting mother‑glass utilization efficiency by up to 64% compared with FMM‑based or other divided‑substrate FMM‑less methods. This translates directly into reduced material waste, higher productivity, and lower manufacturing costs - key advantages as OLED adoption accelerates across IT, TV, automotive, and emerging XR categories.
A Universal, Future‑Proof Platform
One of FLiPP's most striking promises is its freedom from panel size and resolution constraints. LG Display says the method can theoretically support displays from 1 inch to 100 inches, spanning wearables, tablets, monitors, VR/AR optics, and ultra‑large TVs. The company plans to begin with IT‑focused applications before expanding across its full product ecosystem. To secure global recognition, LG Display has filed trademark applications for FLiPP in Korea and major international markets.Strengthening OLED Leadership and Recognition
By combining RGB OLED, widely regarded as the pinnacle of OLED picture quality, with its next‑generation FMM‑less manufacturing process, LG Display aims to reinforce its technological leadership and accelerate differentiation in the premium display sector.Alongside FLiPP, LG Display announced that its Hyper Double Scanning (HDS) driving technology for OLED TVs has won the IMID Display of the Year Award, given to the most outstanding commercialized display product annually. The company is already mass‑producing its entire OLED TV lineup with HDS and intends to maintain its leadership in the global premium TV market.
LG Display is recognized as a global leader in advanced display innovation, spanning thin‑film transistor LCDs and cutting‑edge OLED technologies. The company produces panels in a wide spectrum of sizes and specifications for televisions, laptops, desktop monitors, automotive systems, tablets, and mobile devices. Its manufacturing operations are based in Korea and China, supported by back‑end assembly facilities in Korea, China, and Vietnam.
