2026 TCL RM9L RGB Mini LED specifications and features
10 January 2026, 16:42:09
The TCL RM9L is the brand's first RGB Mini LED series introduced outside its home turf, China. It mirrors the TCL Q10M Ultra series, which was announced in China in September 2025 and is already sold there. Most probably, in Europe it will be sold under the TCL C9L moniker. The RM9L line will launch in the U.S. in 85‑, 98‑, and 115‑inch formats, each promising extreme brightness and unprecedented color performance for an LCD TV.
Back in September, TCL outlined several limitations for the RGB Mini LED technology and argued that SQD‑MiniLED delivers similar or better real‑world performance without the drawbacks inherent to RGB‑based systems.
RGB Mini LED replaces the traditional white LED with three separate emitters for each primary color, enabling extremely pure colors and a wider theoretical gamut than KSF‑ or QD‑Mini LED solutions. But the approach introduces several engineering challenges. Because each color must be controlled independently, increasing dimming zones becomes exponentially more complex. Color crosstalk - visible yellowish fringing where red and green meet -remains an unresolved issue. And when an image contains many different colors, RGB Mini LED systems may mix in white light to simplify processing, reducing color accuracy and shrinking the effective gamut.
SQD‑MiniLED avoids these problems by using a white‑light base with a super-quantum‑dot layer, eliminating color interference and maintaining consistent gamut performance across complex scenes. TCL claims this leads to purer, more accurate colors in real‑world content, even if the theoretical BT.2020 coverage difference appears small on paper.
Physical design is another factor. RGB Mini LED requires a long light‑mixing distance to blend its three emitters into uniform white, making ultra‑thin designs difficult. Current RGB Mini LED models measure 3.5–5 cm thick, while TCL's new X11L SQD‑MiniLED TV comes in at just 2.1 cm, making it the thinnest Mini LED TV on the market.
TCL's solution to these limitations is the RGB Omnidirectional Zone technology, which optimizes light control capabilities through intelligent algorithms, compensating for the inherent contrast deficiencies of RGB technology while significantly improving issues such as color fringing and crosstalk.
Despite these limitations, the RM9L remains a high‑end LCD TV. It features TCL CSOT's WHVA 2.0 Ultra panel with a 4K resolution and 144 Hz refresh rate. All three models are reported to have 7000:1 contrast and 97% BT.2020 color space coverage. The 115RM9L uses 16848 local dimming zones and delivers 9000 nits of peak brightness. The 98RM9L has 11520 local dimming zones and 6000 nits of peak brightness. The 85RM9L has 8736 local dimming zones and 4000 nits of peak brightness. HDR10+ and Dolby Vision support will be included, with expectations pointing toward the updated Dolby Vision 2 standard.
The TCL RM9L RGB Mini LED series is based on the TSR AIPQ Processor with the MediaTek 9655+ chipset in its core. The chipset paired a quad-core 1.8GHz Cortex-A73 CPU and a Mali-G57 GPU. It supports not only 4K@144Hz gaming but also 288Hz at an FHD resolution. Of course, TCL's numerous AI features are also on board. The audio department features a Bang Olufsen system with Dolby Atmos and DTS: X. The connectivity options include four HDMI 2.1 ports with FRL6, a LAN port, an optical audio out, a USB hub, Bluetooth 5.4, and Wi-Fi 6 support.
