Future Samsung models will support the newly released MPEG-5 EVC video codec in addition to AV1Officially released at the end of April, the MPEG-5 EVC video codec is hailed as an excellent solution to provide video streaming through emerging data protocols and networks (such as 5G). Compared to the previous generation standard (such as MPEG-4), the MPEG-5 essential video codec (EVC) provides 4K, 8K, AR / VR and HDR video with higher compression rate and efficiency.

It has been announced that Samsung will cooperate with Huawei and Qualcomm for the initial promotion of the codec in order to increase its adoption rate in the industry. Hence, in addition to the AV1 codec, future Samsung devices will also support the MPEG-5 EVC one. These will include TVs, smartphones, home theater systems, tablets, etc. The first adoption phase is scheduled for the next few years and the three companies said they will provide fair, non-discriminatory and reasonable terms for the basic patent requirements covering the new standard. Their respective MPEG-5 EVC standard license terms will be announced by April 2022.
