The standards are based on current and future technology trends and are coordinated with all companies participating in the association.

According to the official standards, 8K resolution is deemed to be 7680 x 4320 pixels (16:9 aspect ratio) and the input frame rate should be 24 fps, 30 fps and 60 fps. The peak brightness of the display should be more than 600 cd/m2, the video transmission interface should be HDMI 2.1, and the video compression codec should be HEVC (High-Efficiency Video Codec). A logo for 8K products that meet the standards is about to be designed and used as a sticker on complying TVs.

The 8K Association is a global non-profit organization that aims to establish 8K-related standards and expand the 8K-related ecosystem. Currently, it comprises of 16 companies including manufacturers of TVs, display panels, chipsets and content providers. It started off with five members including Samsung, Panasonic, Hisense, TCL, and AUO in January, but now Samsung Display, Innolux, Intel, Novatec, V Silicon, Xperi, Astro Design, Lewis Pictures, Artem, Tencent, Chili, are also included.

Chris Chinnock, Executive Director of the 8K Association, said, "Defining the key attributes for an 8K TV specification demonstrates the 8KA’s focus to quickly define a critical step in the growth in next-generation video technology.
