Samsung Display resumes R&D on OLED TVs based on the inkjet printing process for oxide-based large-sized panels

Samsung Display resumes R&D on OLED TVs based on the inkjet printing process for oxide-based large-sized panelsSouth Korean media ET news reports that Samsung Display has plans for resurrecting its development of OLED TVs. This conclusion is based on the opinion of "multiple representatives from universities and industries". According to them, Samsung Display has summoned a group of 300-400 employees from the LCD Business Department to work on inkjet printing OLED TVs. This could actually mean not only OLED TV development but also research and development of spontaneous-emitting QLED that is an advanced form of OLED. Within its research institute, Samsung Display will appoint a special task force that will focus solely on next-generation TV technologies such as QLED and micro LED. Based on its research, this group will create strategic plans for product development.

The report also states that this R&D group will focus on large-scale oxide TFT technology as well. Probably, that's a move to catch up with LG Display which has already adopted oxide-based large-sized TV panels by using the latest deposition technologies - the inkjet printing process. The first and subsequently abandoned approach of Samsung to OLED back in 2012 and 2013 was based on LTPS (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon) panels.

The new inkjet printing TV technology is a hybrid one and will probably be able to print both OLED and a quantum dot. It uses a blue OLED as a light source and prints a red quantum dot and a green quantum dot on top of a blue OLED through the inkjet method. Samsung refers to this method as QD-OLED. This process is also deemed to be more efficient because pixels can be printed without colour filters. As soon as this tech is stabilized and performance of quantum dot materials is secured, Samsung will start mass-producing QLED TVs. Commercialization of QD-OLED TVs is expected to happen in 2021 or 2022.Източник
